On October 21, 2024, the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, hosted a National Seminar on “Agriculture and the Rural Economy” as part of the Prof. K. N. Raj Centennial celebrations. This event provided a platform for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), including Vamanapuram FPC, to interact with experts and policymakers.

A key component of the seminar was an interactive session titled “Interactions between Farmers’ Representatives and Experts,” facilitating dialogue on challenges and opportunities within the agricultural sector. Representatives from multiple FPOs, including Koyyikkalnadu FPC, Neyyar FPC, Grama Samrudhi FPC, Sahya Samridhi FPC, and Kshoni FPC, participated in these discussions, enabling the exchange of insights and the exploration of funding avenues for sustainable agricultural development.

The seminar addressed various government-backed financial schemes aimed at strengthening rural enterprises and infrastructure. Key schemes discussed included:

  • Agricultural Market Infrastructure (AMI) Scheme
  • NABKISAN & Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF)
  • Prime Minister’s Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME)
  • Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)
  • Kerala’s Local Self-Government Subsidy
  • Navodhan Scheme

The seminar also clarified funding limits for different project types, including ₹2 crore for agri-produce projects and ₹1 crore for other agricultural enterprises. The seminar highlighted funding flexibility for multi-location projects, with FPO federations, cooperatives, and state agencies having fewer restrictions than private entities. The role of Lead District Managers (LDMs) in facilitating credit access was emphasized, encouraging FPOs to utilize available financial support.

The insights gained from the seminar will enable Vamanapuram FPC to explore new funding sources, expand market access, and strengthen its agricultural network. The availability of government-backed financial assistance, training programs, and infrastructure support will facilitate the implementation of impactful projects benefiting farmers and the rural economy. Vamanapuram FPC remains committed to leveraging these opportunities for the sustainable growth and prosperity of its farmer community.
